Embracing "what's next."

BlueCross retiree Susan talks about her decision to retire and how fitness and outdoor exploration factor into her retirement.

How did you know you were ready to retire?

Susan, a BlueCross retiree and member, says the quick answer to that question is that she was looking out the window more than she looked at her computer. "I have always loved the outdoors," she says. "And COVID made me realize how much."

"I just kept looking out the window and wondering, is this going to be my life? What can I do to have a fuller life?"

Retiring From BlueCross BlueShield

Susan landed at BlueCross BlueShield of SC in 1997 and stayed until 2022.

"The thing I miss the most about BlueCross BlueShield is working with nonprofits," she says. "I got to understand the importance that nonprofit organizations make to communities."

According to Susan, the experience of working with local nonprofits has made her more compassionate, self-reliant, adventurous and willing to take risks. These are all traits she believes anyone needs in order to retire.

"Retirement is not being on virtual or perpetual vacation. We have to keep growing as individuals." She's decided that her job in retirement is to learn more about health and fitness, because those factors make the difference.

"Retirement is not being on virtual or perpetual vacation. We have to keep growing as individuals."

Susan is thankful for her health and mobility in retirement. "I know that I can enjoy climbing a mountain, riding my bicycle as fast as I can, watching creeks babble, seeing Oconee Bells up in Brevard...It makes me appreciate being alive."
